The Head of the High Council of State (HCS) Khaled Al-Mishri, has urged the High National Electoral Commission (HNEC) to suspend the election laws as the clock for a planned December poll is ticking down.

The HCS in Tripoli and the east-based House of Representatives (HoR) have been in dispute over a legal framework for elections supposed to help unify the country after a decade of conflict and division.

Last month HoR speaker Aguila Saleh signed off a presidential election law in a move observers said bypassed due process before passing a controversial law on legislative elections in less than a month.

Al-Mishri said Tuesday that "what the House of Representatives has done is a coup against the political track and the constitutional declaration," holding the HNEC accountable for the legal, moral, and security consequences of if it responds to such decisions.

"The House of Representatives took a unilateral action in violation of the due process of the political agreement contained in the constitutional declaration," Al-Mishri said.

The HCS head praised the HNEC's response to a previous request by the Council to suspend the constitutional referendum law based on the same reasons, calling it to adopt a similar approach regarding this issue.
