The Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit has said they are looking forward to seeing more cooperation with the United Nations (UN) to support efforts to end the political deadlock and move forward to elections in the best interest of the Libyan people.

Arab League's spokesman Jamal Rushdi added that they welcome the appointment of Senegalese diplomat Abdoulaye Bathily as new UN envoy to Libya and urged all Libyan parties to work with him and support him.

Rushdi said the Arab League was confident that Bathily would continue the efforts that has been undertaken by the UN to get Libya out of the political impasse by developing an agreed-upon constitutional and legal basis on which the expected national elections would be held, adding that elections became an urgent demand for many Libyans, in addition to being the best way to renew the legitimacy of Libyan institutions.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Senegalese diplomat Abdoulaye Bathiliy as new UN envoy to Libya and Head of UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Saturday to succeed Slovakian diplomat, Jan Kubis.
