An armed group stormed the Libyan Constitution Drafting Assembly headquarters in the eastern city of Al-Bayda on Tuesday and ordered the staff to leave, rapporteur Nadia Omran has said.

Nadia added that the armed group, loyal to the municipal council, ordered the staff to leave on foot and prevented them from taking their bags and cars.

Sources from the city said the municipal council is angry with the Constituent Assembly members for their failure to issue the constitution on time.

Head of the LCDA Ali Al-Tarhouni said his assembly was mistakenly attacked and the armed group confused them with Al-Thani government institutions.

On Sunday, Al-Bayda Municipality declared Al-Thani government and its institutions persona non grata and ordered them to leave the city. Later, the municipal council excluded the central bank from the order.

Angry protesters went to the streets of Al-Bayda on Tuesday to denounce the deteriorating living conditions in the city. The protesters accused Al-Thani government of being behind all the problems in the city including lack of cash and blackouts.

Observers say the mayor's move at this time is aimed at providing suitable atmosphere for the UN-imposed government to locate inside the city in case the latter failed to enter Tripoli. Mayor Ali Hussein is a strong supporter of Skhirat agreement and the UN government.
