The Attorney General's Office announced Tuesday the arrest of two members of the Libyan Intelligence Service accused of attempting to assassinate the Head of the National Safety Authority of the Government of National Unity, Abdulmajid Maligta. The Office said the rest of the people involved in the assassination attempt were being tracked as they had been outside of the country.
The Office said the judicial police completed a measure ordered by the investigating authority against two members of the National Security Department of the Libyan Intelligence Service, as they helped detonate a car bomb that was placed on a route taken by Maligta for the purpose of assassinating him.
"The Office responded to the incident of detonating a portable device, on a vehicle intended to kill the targeted person. The investigators examined the scene of the incident and the effects resulting from the explosion. Then, members of the Information and Communications Affairs Control Department carried out an analysis of the available information about the incident.” It added.
The Office stressed that “technical support work led to understanding the behavior of the suspects before committing the act and after its completion. Then it helped identify the ring of those suspected of carrying out the assassination plot.
It indicated that the members of the Deterrence Force for Combating Terrorism and Organized Crime took the initiative to arrest two people hiding behind their jobs in the National Security Department of the Intelligence Service. The investigators then proceeded to request the procedures necessary to prosecute the remaining conspirators in the act - who are currently outside national jurisdiction - through international cooperation mechanisms.
