Presidential candidate, Fathi Bashagha, has held the Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah accountable for the failure to hold elections last December, urging for replacing the government by a Libyan consensus between the House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State (HCS)

In a meeting with elders and dignitaries from south and west Libya on Friday, Bashagha said Libya was going to hold elections but uncalled for issues got in the way, accusing the GNU of doing everything in its power to hinder the holding of elections while it should have led Libya to the vote, unity of institutions and national reconciliation.

Bashagha said: “We are in the process of replacing the government. We call on the new authorities to prioritize holding elections because this is the desire of all Libyans,” adding the ruling system in Libya should be accepted by the people and shouldn't be “totalitarian” be it military, civilian or theoretical.

He indicated that the upcoming government should fix the problems facing Libyans, especially economic, service and security ones, urging the new leadership to work on unifying the military institution and finalize the national reconciliation process, in addition to activating non-centralism so that all Libyan areas can receive equal attention.
