The Tripoli Court of Appeals has sentenced the Minister of Education in the Government of National Unity, Moussa Al-Maghrif, to three years and six months in prison on corruption charges linked to the printing of school textbooks.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the Tripoli Court of Appeals also fined Al-Maghrif 1,000 dinars and stripped him of his civil rights for the duration of his sentence and an additional year after its completion.
The court found Al-Maghrif guilty of violating the principle of equality and engaging in favoritism and nepotism when managing contracts for the printing and supply of school books.
Earlier, the court had ruled the case inadmissible due to a lack of authorization to proceed. However, following an appeal by the Public Prosecution, Libya’s Supreme Court overturned the decision and ordered a retrial by a different judicial panel.
Al-Maghrif had previously been placed in pretrial detention in December 2021 as part of an investigation into delays in providing school textbooks for the academic year.
Prosecutors accused him of negligence, favoritism, and mismanagement in awarding contracts for the printing and supply of the books.
