Al-Asabaa

The Crisis Committee of the Municipal Council in Al-Asabaa confirmed on Thursday that no official report has yet been issued regarding the outcome of the visit by European Union experts to the city, which has been witnessing a series of mysterious fires since last February, the most recent occurring on Wednesday evening.

This statement comes amid what are said to be leaks circulating among Libyan activists and social media pages, allegedly revealing the findings of the European report on the Al-Asabaa fires.

More than two weeks ago, Al-Asabaa received a team of European experts to investigate the causes of the fires, which have affected dozens of homes in the municipality. The team, consisting of experts from Malta, Finland, and Estonia, initially indicated in their preliminary findings that they ruled out the presence of gases, chemical or physical substances, environmental pollution, or dangerous biological materials.

According to the latest official figures released on Wednesday, the number of affected homes and buildings has reached 237, with six newly reported damaged homes—two of which caught fire for the first time. Five individuals suffered injuries or suffocation on Wednesday, including two young girls, according to the municipality’s media office.
