A Daesh/IS group launched an attack on Mitiga Prison in Tripoli on Friday. Around 9 militants attacked the prison gate at around 6:00 am with grenades and explosives and managed to break into the prison and reach the cells of their fellow inmates.

The attackers equipped their fellows with grenades and guns before exchanging fire with the Deterrent Force personnel, who guard the prison.

An hour later the situation was brought under control and all the attackers were killed. Three guards were also killed in the exchange of fire.

Mitiga Prison houses the most dangerous drug dealers and criminals in addition to other IS affiliated inmates who were snatched upon arriving or departing Mitiga Airport.
