Ministry of Water Resources

Dams Department of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Government of National Unity has raised the state of alert due to expected heavy rain on Thursday and Friday.

Director of the department, Salem Al-Sharif, said that the state of alert and preparations has been raised to encounter any challenges of medium to heavy rain in the northwest of the country, based on the weather warning issued by the National Center for Meteorology.

Al-Sharif explained that the expected rain will start from Thursday and continue until Friday morning, which may lead to the flow of valleys and the flow of water towards the storage dams in the region.

He stressed that the teams supervising the dams in the western region will follow up and monitor the storage quantities in the dams periodically every six hours, starting from Thursday, with the aim of ensuring the readiness of the dams to receive the flowing quantities of water and their safety.

Al-Sharif underlined the importance of taking all necessary measures to deal with any emergency that may occur as a result of heavy rain, through continuous monitoring of the situation on the ground, and submitting periodic reports on developments of water levels.

The National Center of Meteorology warned yesterday of moderate to heavy rain on Thursday and Friday in the far northwest regions.

The center warned, that the border areas with Tunisia (the areas extending from Ras Jadir to Sabratha, Al-Assa, Al-Watiya, Badr, Tiji, Nalut and some neighboring areas) will witness heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, which could cause water to accumulate in low places and some valleys to flow.

The center called on the public to be cautious and stay away from valleys and water pools and take great care when driving motor vehicles and follow the updates issued by the center.
