Libyan Crimes Watch has revealed the death of Faisal Awad Abshish, a detainee at the Garnada military prison, at the hospital in the city of Al-Bayda after his health deteriorated due to medical negligence during his detention.

According to the organization, Abshish’s condition worsened in prison due to poor detention conditions and the lack of necessary medical care. He was eventually transferred to the hospital, where he died a month after his arrival. The prison administration later handed over his body to his family in the city of Derna.

The organization held Haftar’s forces in eastern Libya fully responsible for Abshish’s death, describing the incident as part of a recurring pattern of severe violations inside detention facilities under their control, particularly in the east of the country.

Libyan Crimes Watch called on the Attorney General to launch an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of Faisal Abshish’s death, in line with international standards to ensure justice, accountability, and to prevent impunity.

It also urged the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to investigate this crime and other extrajudicial killings inside detention facilities, considering them serious human rights violations that may amount to crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute.

The group noted that 46-year-old Faisal Abshish was subjected to arbitrary arrest in 2018 and had been held since then without trial, according to their statement.
