Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio has revealed plans for holding a ministerial meeting on Libya along the lines of the Berlin conference next June.

In a briefing before the Italian Parliament on security in the Mediterranean, Di Maio said Italy is actively participating in the follow-up mechanisms of the Berlin process, according to the Nova Italian news agency.

"Germany has called for a new meeting along the lines of the Berlin conference at the ministerial level on June 23 to strengthen international coordination, at the request of Italy," Di Maio told the Parliament.

"There is continuous and fruitful coordination on Libya at the political and technical levels with France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as other regional, European, and international partners," the top Italian diplomat indicated.

Di Maio also confirmed that the head of the Libyan government, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, will visit Italy on May 31.

According to Di Maio's statements, Dbeibah will meet during his visit to Rome Italian economic actors, adding that their partnership with Libya aims to strengthen Libyan national institutions.

The Nova agency quoted Di Maio as saying that Italy's priority in Libya is to protect its economic and security interests while at the same time responding to Libyan expectations of a steady and increasing presence of Italy in Libya, especially in the economic field.
