The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, has received the UN Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, in Rome to get an insight into the latest developments in Libya.
Following the meeting, Di Maio wrote on his Facebook account that "Italy continues to work with maximum efforts," confirming that his government's priorities remain security in the Mediterranean, stability in Libya, and respect for human rights.
The top Italian diplomat also referred to an interview with Pope Francis on Italian television on Sunday, in which the Pope compared the migrant detention centers in Libya to the Nazi concentration camps and called on the European Union to reach a consensus on managing the migration crisis.
“It is urgent to confront the ongoing violations of human rights in Libya, and this issue goes to the heart of Italy’s work,” Di Maio said, stressing that this could only be addressed by a united Europe and with the maximum cooperation and participation of the EU and the international community.
