The Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Friday said it is in contact with the Libyan authorities to negotiate the release of six of its nationals detained in Libya.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, those detained are being held in an illegal immigration centre west of Libya, which it said was "outside the state's control."

In a statement, the Egyptian Embassy in Tripoli urged the relevant authorities to intervene to release its nationals, stressing that it is following up on their situation closely.

"The six citizens left the country with travel permits allowing them to move in eastern Libya and not beyond, which they pledged to abide by, a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.

According to the statement, some of those detained were "exposed to risks" during their stay in Libya in 2021, which required the intervention of their state to facilitate their deportation to the homeland safely.

It called on its nationals to adhere to the travel instructions issued to citizens traveling to Libya and keep their authorities informed about their whereabouts and movements.
