Tripoli

Egypt has called on all Libyan factions to place national interests above all else and immediately end the escalating military tensions in the capital, Tripoli.

In a statement released by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, Cairo voiced deep concern over the ongoing armed clashes in the city, warning that continued violence could lead to open conflict, jeopardising Libya’s stability and endangering civilian lives.

“The continuation of these hostilities threatens not only the lives of civilians but also the unity and institutions of the Libyan state,” the statement read. It urged all parties to engage in dialogue and exercise restraint.

The ministry also appealed to Egyptian nationals currently in Libya to remain indoors, exercise maximum caution, and stay in contact with the Egyptian embassy in Tripoli. An emergency hotline  has been set up for those requiring assistance.

The fighting has erupted between forces affiliated with the Government of National Unity and the Special Deterrence Force (Radaa), which is backed by military units from the western region.

The clashes are reportedly centred around efforts to take control of security installations that have refused to comply with an order from the Prime Minister to come under the authority of the Libyan Army.
