Five major Western countries on Thursday called on Libyan actors to participate constructively with the Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Abdoulaye Bathily, to secure the necessary political, security, and legal environment for holding elections.

In a joint statement, the embassies of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States welcomed the statement issued by the UNSMIL on June 7 regarding the outputs of the 6 + 6 Committee, which concluded its sessions in Bouznika, Morocco.

"We welcome the UNSMIL's commitment to take forward further work with all relevant Libyan institutions and actors to facilitate a process to address all contested elements of the electoral framework, secure the necessary political agreement on the path to elections, and enable a level playing field for all candidates," the statement read.

The group also expressed support for the efforts of the 6 + 6 Committee in reaching an agreement on the draft electoral laws.
