The German Ambassador to Libya, Michael Ohnmacht, said on Friday that the postponement of holding elections in Libya is borne by the Libyan people before any other party.

In an interview with the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Ohnmacht stressed the importance of finding a solution to the long-awaited elections in Libya, as he urged Libyans to take this decision themselves.

The German diplomat warned of the continuation of the status quo and praised the efforts of the UN envoy to Libya towards achieving elections.

In this context, he called on the House of Representatives, the High Council of the State, and all active institutions to respond to the aspirations of the Libyan people and speed up the constitutional framework.

On the other hand, Ohnmacht denied that Europe's role receded in Libya, giving way to an expanding US and regional role.

"The tracks of the two Berlin conferences held in the German capital to resolve the Libyan crisis are still proceeding," the German official said, adding that Germany is ready to host the third forum if needed.

Regarding the security situation, the German ambassador stressed the need for all foreign forces and mercenaries to leave Libyan territory.

He said the expeditious implementation of this decision is ultimately up to the Libyans, as he expressed his country's support for forming technical teams to classify armed groups.
