Libya's general elections must go ahead as planned in December this year, says German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

Maas, who was speaking on the sidelines of an EU foreign ministerial meeting, indicated that he made it clear to Foreign Minister Najla Al-Manqoush that the stage is very crucial, and therefore the elections must be held on time.

This is what the Libyan people demand, says Maas, warning that any postponement of this entitlement would put the legitimacy of Libya's present government into question.

The top German diplomat stressed that mercenaries and foreign forces must leave Libyan territory to allow it to regain its sovereignty.

He confirmed his country's continued cooperation with the Libyan government, the European Union, and the United Nations in accordance with the Berlin 1 and 2 Conferences.
