The Chief of Tobruk port, Ghaith Al-Tuhami, expressed deep concern over the assault on a Turkish ship inside the port by military police personnel on Sunday morning.

"I am totally bewildered by their irresponsible and non-permitted behavior." the port's Chief added.

He added that such an assault is absolutely rejected as the police entered the port fully armed and stormed the Turkish ship "Tanur" before they had confiscated the sailors' passports in a totally illegal manner.

"We are not against investigations that come through legal channels, but what happened today was not legal as this ship remains an international one and has rights regardless of its country." Al-Tuhami explained.

The military police accused the Turkish ship of smuggling oil, Al-Tuhami added, saying that the ship was actually shipping paint thinner, which is not banned.

Tobruk is famous for making paint thinner solvent under official authorities' watch.

"The port is an international hub that has its own sovereignty, which should be respected by all. It has got its own security apparatuses, passports department, customs department and the like." Al-Tuhami remarked.

Military police personnel of Khalifa Haftar's forces in Tobruk assaulted the Turkish ship on Sunday morning accusing it of smuggling oil but later it turned out the ship was legally shipping paint thinner.
