The Head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi called for freeing the asylum seekers who are detained in shelter centers in Libya.

The call for this action came in a presser after Grandi's visit to the shelter centers of illegal migrants in Tripoli on Sunday, when he described the living conditions at the centers as "horrible."

"We understand Libya's caution regarding the security challenge of the immigrants, but there must be other solutions for refugees coming from war zones like Syria and Somalia." Grandi explained.

He indicated that the aim of the visit to Libya is to say that it is time the UN agencies stepped up their presence and activities in Libya.

UNHCR said Sunday that it secured the release of over 800 refugees and asylum seekers from Libya in the last 18 months.
