The second deputy head of the High Council of State (HCS) Fawzi Al-Oqab said the United Kingdom cannot violate the UN Security Council resolution 1937 that froze Libyan assets and then use those assets to compensate Irish Republican Army (IRA) victims.

Al-Oqab added on his Facebook that IRA victims case was settled down with the UK at the time of Gaddafi regime, saying there is no need to bring it up now.

“The UK House of Commons should explain its intention whether it will use “Gaddafi money” or whether the money of the Libyan people. It is not possible that the people would bear the responsibility of the regime which they revolted against and toppled for such reckless behavior.” He indicated.

“I call on the UK to back down from this intention and on the Libyan authorities such as HCS, House of Representatives and Presidential Council to have a united stance in hindering such a procedure from happening.”

The Presidential Council rejected in a statement two days ago the intention of the UK House of Commons to vote for using Libyan frozen assets to compensate the victims of the Irish Republican Army attacks in Britain.
