The High Council of State (HCS) expressed its rejection of the unilateral procedures taking place within the House of Representatives regarding the selection of a new prime minister, saying such actions violate the terms of the Political Agreement.
In a statement issued Sunday evening, the HCS said: “The formation of what has been called the ‘screening committee,’ which includes individuals who do not legitimately represent the Council nor reflect the real political balance within it, is a blatant and far-reaching breach of the Political Agreement and the principle of partnership in the political process. It is also a reckless manipulation of the country’s fate at a critical juncture that cannot afford adventurism or leaps into the unknown.”
The statement stressed that “these unilateral steps, both in form and substance, are imposed and do not bind us in any way. Persisting with this unilateral approach will only lead to further division and drag the country back to square one—political and security chaos.”
The HCS also warned the Central Bank of Libya against bearing full responsibility for the consequences of these measures and their impact on the political settlement process, as well as on national stability and unity. It stressed that the selection of a prime minister is not a matter to be decided by one side or imposed through backroom deals. Rather, it is a national obligation that must be fulfilled through an agreed-upon mechanism, ensuring political balance and the support of all relevant parties.
