The First Deputy Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, criticized on Thursday what he described as the US Embassy’s interference and insistence on imposing financial arrangements on Libyans.

Al-Nuwairi called on Central Bank (CBL) Governor Naji Issa and his deputy Marai Al-Barasi to keep the Bank free from embassy influence and to focus on their official responsibilities.

He underscored that national budgeting and financial regulations are exclusively sovereign concerns, except when tied to foreign aid or subject to borrowing limitations.

Al-Nuwairi denounced the US actions as a violation of law and a breach of the principle of non-intervention, a cornerstone of any nation’s sovereignty.

His remarks followed a meeting between the Central Bank Governor and the US Embassy’s chargé d’affaires to Libya, Jeremy Berndt, who emphasized the importance of the Bank’s integrity and independence in maintaining Libya’s stability, economic prosperity and standing in the global financial system.
