The Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Unity announced on Saturday the discovery of unidentified bodies inside Al-Khadra Hospital in Tripoli, with the Criminal Investigation Department launching an investigation to uncover the details.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, the ministry said that the Criminal Investigation Department, under the instructions of the Public Prosecution, has begun investigating the discovery of nine unidentified bodies inside one of the morgue freezers at Al-Khadra Hospital in Tripoli, which was reportedly previously under the protection of the Stability Support Apparatus.
The statement explained that the department received information about an abandoned freezer inside the hospital, suspected of containing unknown corpses. In coordination with the Public Prosecution, the freezer was opened on Saturday morning, revealing nine decomposed bodies due to prolonged power outages.
The ministry said that immediate measures were taken, including collecting samples from the bodies for forensic analysis to attempt to identify the victims. It added that prosecutors and police records were reviewed for any reports related to these bodies, but no reports had been filed by either the Stability Support Apparatus or Al-Khadra Hospital.
The statement concluded that investigations are ongoing under the direct supervision of the Public Prosecution to uncover all facts and ensure accountability for those involved.
In response to these reports, the Stability Support Apparatus said that the bodies found in Al-Khadra Hospital or the Abu Salim Accidents Hospital belonged to fighters from Khalifa Haftar’s forces who were killed during the war on Tripoli. They claimed they had attempted to return the bodies under UN auspices, but Haftar’s forces refused to receive them.
