Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has expressed his hope for political consultations to resume in Libya and for setting a new date for elections.

At the end-of-year press conference, Draghi said Italy and Europe have accompanied the democratic process in Libya and will continue their support, adding that the failure to hold the elections was due to "Libyan institutional complexities."

The situation is still very fragmented between different centers of power in the country, Draghi says, though he did praise the progress made regarding the ceasefire and the withdrawal of some mercenaries.

The Italian PM stressed the UN and EU commitment to help Libya through the International Organization for Migration and to work to establish humanitarian corridors and help return migrants to their countries.
