The Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU) has signed two memoranda of understanding (MoU) in energy and gas cooperation with Turkey. The signing of the MoUs was done by Foreign Ministers and Economy and Trade Ministers of Libya and Turkey.
The Libyan FM Najla Al-Mangoush said in a joint press conference with her Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu that the MoU was in the best interest of both countries and would help all efforts the global gas and energy crisis.
"The MoU needs registration with the UN. When activated, it would be executed. We haven't discussed this today because a technical part wasn't reviewed." Al-Mangoush said.
The Minister of Economy and Trade Mohammed Al-Huweij signed the MoU on behalf of Oil and Gas Minister Mohammed Oun, who is abroad on a mission.
"We have agreed with the Turkish side to rally international support for a shortened roadmap for holding elections in Libya. We need first to end the differences regarding the constitutional basis." Al-Mangoush remarked.
Meanwhile, Cavusoglu said Ankara encourages trade exchanges with Libya using local currencies and the exchange between the two countries is expected to increase to 4 billion dollars, adding that the trade agreement with Libya guarantees the rights of the two countries in the Mediterranean and that the MoU in military and security cooperation is vital for Libya's stability as is the maritime MoU, which ensures joint interests. He also said Ankara is preparing to open its consulate in Benghazi.
