Libya concluded its presidency of the fourth edition of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction (MENWMDFZ).
According to a statement published by the Permanent Mission of Libya to the United Nations on its official Facebook page, the Libyan ambassador, Taher El Sonni, handed over the presidency of the conference to Mauritania in a session attended by the President of the United Nations General Assembly, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs.
The mission's statement confirmed that despite the challenges witnessed by the Middle East region throughout the year, Libya, through its Permanent Mission team to the United Nations, worked to enhance the conference's efforts by introducing fundamental updates to the mechanisms of the working groups.
It also led substantive discussions on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and means of nuclear verification, within the framework of supporting the achievement of disarmament goals and ensuring regional security.
