The Government of National Unity (GNU) has announced plans to launch electronic work visas for foreign nationals before the end of 2024, in a significant move to streamline immigration procedures and enhance monitoring of foreign workers in Libya.

The announcement was made by the Head of the Directorate of Passports, Nationality, and Foreigners Affairs, who emphasized that preparations are in full swing to ensure the system's launch within the set timeline. The development was confirmed via the government’s official Facebook page.

Key officials, including the Minister of Labour and Rehabilitation, Ali Al-Abed, and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Adel Jumaa, convened on Thursday in Tripoli to discuss the final technical procedures. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister's Office, was attended by the Head of the Directorate of Passports and representatives from Libya’s security agencies and the Libyan Telecommunications Holding Company.

Discussions centred on integrating the "Wafid" system with the forthcoming electronic visa platform. This integration is expected to tighten oversight on the movement and residency of foreigners in Libya.

According to the Directorate, the project is advancing rapidly, with close collaboration between the Ministry of Labour, telecommunications experts, and security officials. The "Wafid" system, which issues work permits, will serve as the foundation for the electronic visa rollout.
