Libya's Minister of Interior, Emad Al-Trabelsi, confirmed during the meeting of the Interior Ministers of the G7 countries that Libya "refuses in principle to be a transit platform or a space for temporary residence for illegal immigrants."
The Minister explained that Libya, due to its geographical location as a transit country, bears great burdens due to the influx of illegal immigrants, which requires joint efforts from all concerned countries to confront this problem.
He has stressed that Libya views immigrants from a humanitarian perspective, reaffirming commitment to providing support and care in accordance with international standards, and calling for the need to work to find radical and permanent solutions to this phenomenon in a way that ensures the protection of immigrants' rights and achieves security and stability in the region as well as the whole world.
Al-Trabelsi stressed Libya's readiness to fully cooperate with all countries and international organizations to combat illegal immigration and reiterated its commitment to respect various relevant international conventions.
Al-Trabelsi arrived in the Italian city of Naples on Thursday to participate in the G7 Interior Ministers' Meeting, which includes the Interior Ministers of the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Canada, Germany, and Japan, in addition to the Interior Ministers of Algeria and Tunisia.
Al-Trabelsi's participation comes at the official invitation of the Italian Interior Ministry to discuss a number of security issues and coordination mechanisms among the participating countries, especially the issues of illegal immigration and combating human trafficking gangs.
