Ajdabiya

The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has reported that Adel Al-Werfli, a citizen who died after being detained in Ajdabiya, was subjected to severe physical torture, which led to his death.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the institution explained that Al-Werfli was arrested from his home on December 1 and transferred to the Investigation and Information Department of the Ajdabiya Security Directorate.

He was placed in solitary confinement, presented to the public prosecution, and later transferred to the Ajdabiya Rehabilitation and Correctional Facility under the orders of the public prosecutor.

Upon his arrival at the facility, security personnel discovered signs of severe beating and torture. Hours later, he lost consciousness and was taken to Imam Al-Muqreif Hospital, where he fell into a coma for 12 days due to head injuries sustained during his detention. Al-Werfli died on December 16, according to the institution.

The Human Rights Institution has filed a report with the Public Prosecutor, calling for a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.

The institution also placed full legal responsibility on the Ministry of Interior, particularly the General Department of Inspection and Follow-up, for allegedly overlooking these crimes and violations.
