Libya’s Interior Minister in the Government of National Unity, Emad Al-Trabelsi, announced that the ministry is prepared to form a specialized security force to protect the southern borders, in coordination with all security and military agencies in the region.

This statement came during an emergency meeting of the High Committee for Combating Illegal Migration and Border Security, which Al-Trabelsi chaired on Saturday. The meeting was held to follow up on the outcomes of a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister last Thursday, following reports about the government’s alleged plan to resettle immigrants in response to European and international requests.

Al-Trabelsi stressed during the meeting that the issue of illegal immigration is not new but has been ongoing for decades. He emphasized that addressing it at the root requires securing and protecting the borders, especially with neighboring southern countries, according to a statement posted on the ministry’s Facebook page.

Al-Trabelsi highlighted the importance of carrying out intensive security operations to combat illegal immigration, dismantle human trafficking networks, and crack down on smuggling gangs. Al-Trabelsi underscored that the primary goal is to protect the country and strengthen national security.

He also stressed the need to accelerate voluntary repatriation programs for immigrants to their home countries and to enhance cooperation with international partners to tackle the issue through a comprehensive approach that considers both security and humanitarian aspects.

Al-Trabelsi hailed the “efforts of security agencies” and military units in combating illegal immigration and securing Libya’s western land borders and coasts. He stated that these efforts have resulted in the interception of several human trafficking operations and the rescue of immigrants at sea. He emphasized that “this work aligns with the teachings of Islam, which call for saving lives, fighting crime, and protecting society, in line with our national and humanitarian values.”
