A Libyan political movement has called on the Presidential Council (PC) not to retreat from a series of controversial decrees, urging it to implement them despite mounting pressure.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Civil Movement to Restore Legitimacy to the People appealed to the council to engage with key political parties and civil society groups, including the Revolution Squares Coordination, to garner support.

The movement criticised the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for opposing the decrees and labelling them unilateral. It accused the mission of overlooking similar unilateral actions by the House of Representatives, which it said had led to institutional division and the creation of a parallel government.

The group urged the Council to issue a decree calling for parliamentary elections, either under Law No. 4 of 2012 on the National Congress or Law No. 10 of 2014 on the House of Representatives.

Three recent PC decrees include the cancellation of a law establishing a constitutional court, the election of a general conference for national reconciliation, and the creation of a national commission for inquiry.
