Libyan Unity Government says it will remain in power, defies HoR confidence in Bashagha

The Libyan Government of National Unity said it would remain in power not caring about the “mess and fabrication” made by the House of Representatives (HoR) that led to voting confidence in a new government led by Fathi Bashagha, vowing to lead the country to elections in June 2022.

A statement by the government said what happened at the HoR in Tobruk on Tuesday was outright fabrication that led to approving a new government, adding that all Libyans saw the evidence of that fabrication on TV as the session lacked quorum, which was confirmed by a number of HoR members who said they weren't present in Tobruk but were counted as voters anyway. The statement indicated that even with those unreal votes, the quorum didn't make the cut.

The statement said fabrication by the HoR presidency started when it withdrew confidence from the unity government using the same method and then appointed a PM (Bashagha) within a quorum. It added that all those measures were made in violation of the Libyan political agreement that specified the procedures of constitutional amendment and forming executive authority, saying this new step would take Libya back to partition and division.

The Libyan HoR gave Tuesday afternoon confidence to the government formation of Fathi Bashagha to replace the Government of National Unity of Abdul Hamid Dbeibah by a majority vote of 92 members out of 101 attending ones, according to an announcement by the Speaker of the HoR, Aqila Saleh.

Despite the session being on air, doubt was cast on the confidence vote as activists counted the names announced at the voting session of the HoR, saying they barely reached 70 not 92 as the HoR Speaker said.
