A number of Tripoli residents protested Sunday at the headquarters of Presidential Council the long-hour power cuts that have been sweeping through the capital and surrounding suburbs since the start of summer heat.

The protesters called for holding accountable the board of directors of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), saying they should be sacked and accusing them of corruption and failure to resolve the problems of electricity services for years, while using budgets worth billions of dollars.

Officials have been calling lately for sacking the GECOL board of directors and appointing a new one. The calls include those of Tajoura and Souq Al-Jumua mayors who called for an open strike on July 01 at the headquarters of Presidential Council to urge for sacking GECOL board.

GECOL blamed last week the war on Tripoli for the damage of power services, especially the damage in eastern Tripoli neighborhoods, which was confirmed by a statement by a committee tasked with rebuilding damaged power networks, saying southern Tripoli neighborhoods saw heavy damages in power grids due to the fighting that went on for 14 months.
