The Supreme Council of Amazigh in Libya has rejected the draft constitution proposed by the Constitution Drafting Assembly, calling it flawed and biased toward powerful factions.

In a statement on Thursday, the council announced it would boycott any referendum on the draft in mountain cities and warned of escalatory measures if calls for a referendum persist.

The council criticized the drafting process, stating it occurred while the Amazigh were boycotting the assembly and failed to meet basic standards of consensus or constitutional drafting principles.

They urged Libyan political stakeholders to establish a consensual legal framework for the country’s next phase, warning against actions that could lead to chaos and conflict. The council also called on the UN mission in Libya to mediate an inclusive dialogue on electoral laws among political parties.

Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah condemned what he called efforts to obstruct the constitutional referendum, describing it as an attack on the will of the Libyan people.
