Libya's top religious cleric has called on the country's two rival parliaments to get closer to each other and reconcile in order to avoid division.

Speaking on Tanasuh TV on Wednesday, Grand Mufti Sheikh Al-Sadiq Al-Gharyani hailed the previous meetings between presidents of the General National Congress and Tobruk Parliament, urging both parliaments to continue their joint meetings to settle their differences. He also urged Tobruk Parliament to disown renegade General Khalifa Haftar for being an obstacle to reconciliation.

"The House of Representatives is under pressure from Haftar's forces, and Haftar is under foreign pressure from the UAE and other countries which do not want stability in Libya." He said, calling the eastern parliament and all Libyans to get rid of Haftar, and punish and expel him for his acts.

He also pointed out that Tripoli government is still paying the salaries of Libyans who are fighting it in order to keep the country united and bridge the gap between the Libyan rivals.

"I call the House of Representatives and the wise people, who approached the GNC, for unity and to continue in this way for the sake of the nation, and to disown the oppressors." He explained.
