The UK Prison Service has reported that Libyan-British national Hashem Abedi, accused in the Manchester Arena bombing, attacked three officers at Frankland Prison in Durham using hot cooking oil.
According to the Prison Officers’ Association, Abedi poured hot oil on the officers on Saturday “before stabbing them with a homemade sharp object,” as reported by the Hereford Times.
The association stated that the officers sustained life-threatening injuries, including burns and stab wounds, in what it described as an “unprovoked and brutal” attack.
UK Justice Secretary posted on her X account: “I am appalled by the attack on three Frankland prison officers today. My thoughts are with them and their families.” She added that “the police are now investigating. I will demand the toughest possible punishment.”
On August 20, 2020, a UK court sentenced Hashem Abedi to life imprisonment for his involvement in the Manchester Arena bombing, carried out with his brother Salman, which killed 22 people.
Abedi is currently serving his sentence at Category A Frankland Prison, the highest security level in the UK, which houses some of the country’s most dangerous offenders.
