The Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, hailed the African role in supporting the national reconciliation process in Libya, especially the African High-Level Committee headed by the President of Congo Brazzaville, Denis Sassou Nguesso, and the African Union Commission, noting that Libya is witnessing great momentum to support national priorities.
This came in his speech on Sunday at the 38th session of the African Union Conference in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, which was devoted to discussing the "State of Peace and Security in Africa Report", according to the media office of the Head of the Presidential Council.
Menfi said that "Libya has recently witnessed great momentum to support national priorities, especially enhancing security and stability, achieving national reconciliation, moving forward toward development and reconstruction, and unifying institutions."
He stressed that "terrorism in Libya has been completely eliminated since 2017 and that the terrorist groups that threatened the security of Libya and the region no longer have any real presence on the ground."
Menfi recalled the Libyan authorities' continued efforts to combat smuggling, organized crime and human trafficking, noting that these are challenges facing many countries in the region, and it is important to address these issues through regional and international cooperation, instead of presenting an inaccurate image that suggests the existence of an actual and direct terrorist threat from within Libya.
He also stressed that "Libya is witnessing an unprecedented phase of development, reconstruction and strategic projects in the fields of infrastructure, energy, education and health, accompanied by the return of foreign companies and investments at an accelerated pace." He said that the Presidential Council is working in coordination with the African Union to achieve comprehensive reconciliation based on transitional justice and reparations, ensuring the end of divisions and creating a stable environment for the success of the general elections.
Menfi called on the African Union to encourage all parties involved in the political process to stop unilateral steps that constitute a departure from the political agreement. At the end of his speech, he welcomed the signing of the agreement to host the African Union headquarters and its return to Tripoli, urging the African Commission to take the necessary measures to work on the office starting its duties from Tripoli before the end of the first quarter of this year.
