The Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, met with the new UN envoy to Libya, Hanna Tetteh, on Saturday for the first time at the Council’s headquarters in the capital, Tripoli.
The Presidential Council said that the meeting was attended by Tetteh's deputies, Stephanie Koury and Anis Chuma, along with a delegation from the mission. The discussions focused on overcoming the political deadlock by reaching a unified vision that fulfills the aspirations of the Libyan people and leads to holding general elections.
Menfi expressed his desire to continue cooperation and joint work with the UN mission. The statement also mentioned that Tetteh listened to the Presidential Council’s vision for overcoming the deadlock and emphasized the importance of Libyan ownership of the political process, in collaboration with all parties, to reach a unified vision that meets the people’s aspirations and culminates in elections.
The meeting touched on the continuation of cooperation with the African Union and regional and international partners, as well as efforts to stop negative interferences that impact Libya’s political landscape and hinder stability across the country.
Last Thursday, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, received Tetteh, in her first meeting after officially assuming her duties in Tripoli. He welcomed Tetteh, wishing her success in her mission and reaffirming the government’s support for UN efforts to enhance Libya’s stability, work toward elections, and end the transitional phases.
Meanwhile, UNSMIL said on its Facebook page that Tetteh expressed deep appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated her commitment to cooperating with all Libyan parties. She stressed the crucial importance of supporting Libyan efforts to strengthen national unity, safeguard the country’s security, and preserve its sovereignty.
