Presidential Council (PC) head Mohamed Menfi met on Tuesday with the United Nations Special Envoy to Libya, Hanna Tetteh, as international efforts to advance the country’s long-delayed elections continue.
Tetteh, accompanied by Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs Stephanie Khoury, discussed with Menfi the latest developments on Libya’s electoral roadmap and ongoing security concerns.
The meeting, held in the capital Tripoli, focused on removing obstacles to holding national elections. Tetteh reiterated the UN's commitment to facilitating dialogue among Libyan factions, emphasising the importance of a political settlement.
Both parties also addressed the country’s deteriorating security landscape, particularly the operations of criminal networks engaged in migrant smuggling and human trafficking.
They agreed on the need for enhanced cooperation with international mechanisms to track and prosecute human rights violators, in accordance with Libyan law.
On the economic front, discussions highlighted the need for increased financial transparency. The officials stressed the importance of implementing robust oversight mechanisms to ensure accountability in public spending, aiming to restore public confidence in state institutions.
