A moderate earthquake struck the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya on Saturday evening, but authorities have reported no injuries or damage.
According to the Libyan Centre for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences, the quake was recorded at 7:35 PM local time and measured 4.1 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located 73 kilometres below sea level, approximately 125 kilometres north of the capital, Tripoli.
The centre confirmed that it had not received any reports from residents feeling the tremor, nor were there any immediate signs of structural damage.
In response, Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah instructed the Housing and Utilities Authority to conduct immediate inspections of roads and public infrastructure to ensure the safety of citizens and respond swiftly to any potential impact.
Tripoli’s police chief also confirmed that no human or material losses had been reported. Security teams are continuing to monitor the situation on the ground, according to a statement published by the government’s official platform Hakomitna.
