Kufra Municipality spokesman Abdullah Suleiman has confirmed that the Kufra Municipality is facing major challenges in dealing with the increasing numbers of displaced Sudanese refugees to Libya due to the armed conflict in their country.
Suleiman called on the competent authorities to expedite the provision of the necessary support to the municipality of Kufra, indicating that the municipal health institutions have so far issued approximately 21,000 health certificates to displaced people from Sudan, and that the number of displaced people is likely to rise.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recently called on the international community to provide l support to the millions of Sudanese who are forced to flee their homes to neighboring countries.
The UNHCR confirmed that it needs $1.5 billion, in order to provide assistance and protection to up to 3.3 million people who were forced to leave their homes until the end of the year, as well as local communities in neighboring countries.
Libya and Uganda are among the countries to which Sudanese refugees are heading, as more than 20,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Libya since April 2023, the UNHCR added.
