Abdulrahman Milad, also known as "Al-Bidja," the Commander of the Naval Academy in Libya, was killed by gunmen on Sunday evening as he left the academy in Sayyad, west of Tripoli.
Protests erupted in Zawiya, Milad's hometown, with demonstrators blocking the coastal road in response to the assassination.
Former High Council of State head, Khaled Al-Mishri, mourned the death of Al-Bidja and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Milad had been named in a 2018 UN report for involvement in human trafficking and human rights abuses and was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in the same year.
Despite his arrest in 2020, following an Interpol notice, Milad was released in April 2021. His death has sparked calls for a thorough investigation into the incident.
