New military officer appointed as mayor in east Libya
The Chief of Staff of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives and the military governor of the eastern region, Abdelraziq Al-Nathori, has sacked newly appointed Abyar mayor Fathallah Gotrani and replaced him with a military brigadier, the latest in a series of mayor dismissals.
Al-Nathori appointed Brigadier Salem Rafadi as the new mayor of Abyar, a step that aims to militarize the eastern region.
Gotrani, a civil engineer, was also appointed by Al-Nathori last July to replace the elected mayor Mohammed Rabeesh after he pledged allegiance to the UN-proposed government.
Abyar is a town near Dignity Operation's stronghold town of Marj, around 50 km to the east of Benghazi.
Last month, Al-Nathori fired the elected Al-Kufra mayor and replaced him with Colonel Saleh Al-Zarrouq.
