The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has strongly condemned the torture of abducted MP Ibrahim Al-Darsi, whose shocking images naked and shackled inside an unknown cell surfaced a year after his forced disappearance in Benghazi.

The institution described the incident as a grave violation of human rights and parliamentary immunity, as well as a breach of both national and international law.

It called on judicial and security authorities in Benghazi to immediately investigate the disappearances of Al-Darsi and fellow MP Seham Sergiwa, and to reveal their fate.

The institution also urged the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor to launch an international investigation into cases of enforced disappearance and torture.

Holding the forces controlling eastern Libya responsible for Al-Darsi’s safety, the institution warned against politicizing human rights issues and stressed that silence only deepens impunity and undermines the foundations of a civil state.
