The National Oil Corporation (NOC) said it had shut down production in Sharara oilfield and all workers had been evicted after an attack targeted the field's 186 unit on Saturday morning.

The attack resulted in the abduction of four engineers, one of whom is Romanian. Later two of the abducted were released, while the other two remained in custody - one Libyan and one Romanian.

The NOC said in a statement that together with the operating company Acacus that it is following the incident closely and is expecting to lose 160.000 barrels per day over the Sharara filed shutdown.

Sources from Ubari said that foreign engineers who work in Sharara oilfield left after the abduction incident to Tripoli so they can afterward leave Libya because of the abduction.

No party claimed the attack and abduction, as Sharara oilfield's security force in cooperation with Ubari security room had started combing missions.

Sharara is Libya's biggest oil field with 270.000 bpd and is located in the south. It has been recently a target for armed groups to try and coerce authorities into stratifying their demands.
