The National Oil Corporation (NOC) has denounced the closure of the gas pipeline that feeds Al-Zawiya power plant in Beaar Al-Faes district by a group of individuals.
“The shutdown of the gas pipeline led to the loss big proportions of its electricity generation as it had been obliged to use diesel fuel to operate, leaving the power plant to deal with the consequences of that procedure.” The NOC said Tuesday.
“Financial consequences of the act are very big due to the increase of importing fuel and the growing of smuggling crimes that will take place in line with it inside Al-Zawiya city.” The NOC statement reads.
It also described the shutting down of fields and pipelines and other oil facilities as unjustifiable criminal acts that cannot be based on any demands, no matter how urgent they are, pointing out that all should look for the best interest of the country so that every Libyan can regain stability before it is too late.
An armed group closed the gas pipeline that feeds Al-Zawiya power plant leading to the loss of 350 megawatts of its total electricity generation and thus causing a total blackout in the southern region, which relies on this power plant for most of its electricity feed, according to a statement by the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL).
Social media pages posted a statement issued by a group calling itself ‘Al-Zawiya Syndicates Council’ saying that it is responsible for the closure of the pipeline.
“We will take more serious measures if our demands are not satisfied.” The group’s statement says.
According to the statement, the group wants the release of 90 people, who are abducted based on their identity cards from Al-Zawiya in Wirshiffana district, and the reopening of the coastal road.
