US ambassador Richard Norland met in Cairo with Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HOR) Speaker Aqila Saleh to learn about the HOR’s efforts to promote a demilitarized solution for Sirte and Jufra, enable the National Oil Corporation to resume its vital work while ensuring that oil and gas revenues are managed transparently, and improve governance leading to credible and peaceful elections.
The US embassy in Libya said ambassador Norland expressed support for the Saleh's aspirations and those of all responsible Libyan elements, for a Libyan solution to end the conflict and ensure a stable and prosperous future for the Libyan people.
Meanwhile, the HoR said the meeting in Cairo reviewed ways to consolidate ceasefire and return to political dialogue to end the Libyan conflict, adding that the meeting also went over "Saleh's initiative" or "HoR initiative" to reach a solution based on Cairo Declaration and Berlin Conference conclusions.
Uneasy calm and military build-up are going hand in hand in Sirte and Jufra as well as inside the oil crescent region amid speedy meetings and political efforts.
Reports have said Russia, via Egypt, has set up S-300 anti-aircraft systems in Sirte and Jufra as well as in Ras Lanuf oil port as Russian military aircraft keep landing in Sirte's Gardabiya and Jura airbases, according to Sirte-Jufra Operations Room spokesman Abdelhadi Drah.
