The US ambassador and special envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, has told the Head of the High Council of State (HCS) Khalid Al-Mishri on the phone that Washington supports any process that gives Libyans a united, sovereign and elected government.

"I spoke with Al-Mishri to convey US support for efforts to restore momentum to presidential and parliamentary elections following the postponement in December." Norland said, according to the US embassy on Twitter.

He added that Al-Mishri had cited the nearly three million Libyans who are ready to cast their votes, describing intensified efforts with the House of Representatives to agree promptly on a roadmap that will give the public confidence that elections will take place as soon as possible.

Al-Mishri stressed, according to an HCS statement, the need to push forward the constitutional track for elections to be based on solid basis and specified timeline, stressing the need to go through with holding elections, and saying that Norland had seen eye to eye with Al-Mishri on such efforts to end the current deadlock.
