The Commander of Operation IRINI, Admiral Stefano Turchetto, has stated that 23 European countries have contributed to their relentless commitment to the Common European Security and Defense Policy for a lasting peace in Libya.
Turchetto indicated that IRINI is the only party committed to implementing the United Nations resolutions regarding the arms embargo imposed on Libya and integrating international efforts to achieve stability in the region.
This came during the ceremony of handing over and receiving the leadership of the IRINI Naval and Air Task Force that took place at the Italian Naval Base of Taranto on Saturday.
Admiral Stefano confirmed that IRINI found and seized around 150 armoured vehicles or modified for military use on three occasions during inspections and inquiries conducted for about 9,000 commercial ships, and 25 suspicious ships in the Mediterranean.
