The European Council has extended the mandate of Operation IRINI, tasked with implementing the arms embargo on Libya until March 31, 2027.
This decision follows the strategic review of the operation conducted by the Political and Security Committee.
According to a statement on its website, the European Council has also decided to add a new task to the operation’s mandate. Operation Irini will now conduct monitoring, surveillance, and information-gathering activities on illicit activities beyond arms trafficking, related materials, and the illegal export of oil from Libya.
Additionally, the operation will collect information for protecting critical maritime infrastructure and emergency planning, thereby further contributing to maritime situational awareness in the area of operations and the broader joint operations area.
